You have not eaten in a Montreal Deli until you have had a Wilensky...actually it is not a deli and it has just one famous sandwich which...but when u eat there u are sitting with history and the umpteen number of your own descendants that lived in Montreal in that area of town. Let us not forget the vanilla coke which Wliensky's still serves.(Is it bad that you have to order it in french now??)

I'm not qualified to weigh in on any discussion of Canadian Jewish delis but the vanilla coke reference hit home.When I was teenager I worked in a luncheonette that was owned by a Jewish couple from the Lower East Side of NYC and while I was there became familiar with many culinary specialties of the N. American branch of the Diaspora. One of the things on the menu was "vanilla coke.'
