Australain Rice Crop Reduced by 98%

As Australia dries, a global shortage of rice - International Herald Tribune: "The collapse of Australia's rice production is one of several factors contributing to a doubling of rice prices in the last three months — increases that have led the world's largest exporters to restrict exports severely, spurred panicked hoarding in Hong Kong and the Philippines, and set off violent protests in countries including Cameroon, Egypt, Ethiopia, Haiti, Indonesia, Italy, Ivory Coast, Mauritania, the Philippines, Thailand, Uzbekistan and Yemen"

17 people actually died in rioting in Egypt.

The price of rice is up something like 300% in places like Sierra Leone.

I tell ya Bob, thats going to cripple the already non-existent economy here in Liberia (Monrovia, where I am at) which imports 90% of its rice, and thats what they eat EVERY DAY.

Jennie, I can pretty much confirm Sierra Leone will be struggling as we are neighboring...

Our organization is working out the protocal details as we speak to go to Sierra Leone next year for the 10 month outreach period of time.

Its kind of ironic that our organization (the galley to be specific) has rice donations of huge amounts donated to us from time to time for use with feeding the crew...even though our main mission is free medical care.

We emply a lot of the locals to work on the ship, and we feed them as well...they eat like there is no tomorrow, and JUSTIFIABLY so!
