Rat News: From Sublime to Ridiculous

First the Sublime

Efforts to stem the spread of Avian flu has taken such a heavy toll on populations of chickens, that many Vietnamese have taken to eating cats and snake because, as everyone knows, these taste just like chicken. Trouble is that one result of turning so many predators into dinner has been a huge increase in the size of the rat population. But not to worry, the clever chefs of Viet Nam have come up with a solution...

You can read more about it here in the Wall Street Journal.

Now the ridiculous

Well, perhaps ridiculous is a bit harsh. The following is about how PETA is appealing to Asians to be nice to rats during the Year of the Rat which begins tomorrow, I think.

Be kind to rodents in Year of the Rat, plead animal lovers

You know, in places like the New Guinea Highlands, there isn't much in the way of proteins. They have pigs, but they're mostly used for more or less special occasions; thus one other source of protein is rats. Eating them has its place in a complex and sustainable aspect of their traditional culture. Unfortunately, their system of smoking doesn't always yield a fully cooked result...but then again, maybe that's the way they like it....raw rat....

Say, Bob, do you think that MR's good friend, Bourdain, might have a decent recipe for rat? Or are you hoarding a recipe or two for yourself?

Well not really ridiculous at all. Rats seem to have a pretty highly developed sense of awareness and community relative to other animals we give much more consideration. Yet the notion of not using these animals by the millions in drug toxicity tests, cosmetic testing, or otherwise superfluous medical testing seems silly. If Fido and Lassy were being pumped with the latest statin until half of the original test group died off, the public uproar would be deafening.
