Fire at Duck Farm

So this morning I tell Ruhlman that I'm scheduled to visit Hudson Valley Farms (the foie gras people in NY) with our mutual friend Mike Pardus tomorrow and he sends me this

Bethel — Some 15,000 breeding ducks were incinerated in a fire Tuesday night near Swan Lake.

Towering flames that could be seen halfway across the county ripped through a warehouse rented by Hudson Valley Foie Gras, destroying the 30-by-450-foot warehouse, a garage containing equipment and a car. [Source]

As of this writing it appears to be an accident; I really hope it isn't arson.

wow..... I really hope its not arson either, but I have this feeling like it is.

I am afraid I am suspicious too, but I'll wait 'til the arson investigators report.

The loss of the ducks was a real tragedy. My deepest sympathies go out to the farmers at Hudson Valley Foie Gras. I'm sure no one feels the loss of the ducks as deeply as their caretakers do.

Thankfully, it doesn't look like the business or the quality of the foie gras will be affected. Even though the blaze took out the breeder ducks, HVFG has always worked towards ensuring a continued supply of eggs. My sources tell me they are switching to alternative suppliers that are already in place.
